Young people shoot and score with Posh at friday night football

25 July 2012.

Young people of all ages and abilities will have the opportunity to come together and play football throughout the summer holidays at Ormiston Bushfield Academy starting this Friday (27 July 2012).

The Summer Friday Night Football Project will run every Friday for four weeks and will be held on the artificial pitch at the back of the old Ormiston Bushfield Academy building at the Orton Centre. The final session will take place on Friday 17 August 2012.

For young people aged 11 to 14, football sessions will start at 5.30pm and finish at 7pm, followed by a session for 15 to 19 year olds from 7pm to 8.30pm. A Peterborough United coach will be attending the sessions and working with the young people to improve their skills.

Carlos Harrison, South Team Community Based Youthworker for Peterborough City Council, said: “This project is an excellent opportunity for young people of all ages and abilities to come together for a common interest. We want to encourage talent, build confidence and get our young people involved in positive activities.”

The project is being run in partnership with Peterborough United, Cambridgeshire Police and local ward councillors, who awarded £504.00 Community Leadership Funding.

Nick Sheppard, Participation and Social Inclusion Manager for Peterborough United, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership once again with the city council.  We have many successful projects that we are running in partnership and we are delighted to be continuing our work with the city council.”

Councillor Sheila Scott, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services for Peterborough City Council, said: “It is projects such as these that offer our young people the opportunity to have fun, meet new friends, burn off some energy and improve their football skills. Who knows, we could have a future football star in our city! Providing a safe and caring environment for young people allows them to interact with others and is certain to have a positive effect on their personal growth and development.”

Throughout the four weeks there will be an ongoing tournament with a prize presented at the end to the winning teams.
