Rise to the recycling challenge during national recycle week

13 June 2012

Did you know that the UK uses a staggering 15 million plastic bottles and 13.5 million drinks cans every day – and that number is predicted to triple during Euro 2012 and the Olympics?

With only half reaching the recycling bin, Recycle Week, 18 to 24 June, is challenging us to use this summer’s events programme to collect a record number of bottles and cans too!

Enterprise Peterborough LogoTo mark the national Recycle Week campaign the Enterprise Peterborough Community Engagement Team invites residents to meet them at roadshows across the city to ask questions on waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

Peterborough is among 90 per cent of UK councils that collects plastic bottles – not just drink bottles but also shampoo, bleach, shower gel, and even garden products. And in Peterborough we recycle them in our green bins from our doorstep.

Plastic bottles can be turned into fences, bags, flooring, windows frames, fleeces, fibre fillings and even more bottles. Drinks cans are mostly recycled into cans again and it takes only a couple of months for a recycled can to become a new can again.

There are also energy savings in recycling. If all of us in England recycled just one more plastic bottle each during Recycle Week, we would save enough energy to power over 60,000 plasma TVs for a year!

The team will be in the following locations during the week:

  • Monday 18 June, Hampton Hargate Primary School, 2.45pm – 4.00pm
  • Tuesday 19 June, Central Park, 12.00pm – 2.00pm
  • Wednesday 20 June, Asda, 10.00am – 2.00pm
  • Thursday 21 June, Asda, 12.00pm – 6.00pm
  • Friday 22 June, Orton Shopping Centre, 12.00pm – 3.00pm
  • Saturday 23 June, Westraven Fun Day, 11.00 am – 3.00pm

As this year’s theme is ‘Recycle at home and away’, Enterprise Peterborough is encouraging  residents to make the best use of their recycling facilities at home, including free door step collections and bulky collections, as well as using the recycling bins that are available in various locations across the city.

Ends.
