NAPPY INITIATIVE SET TO IMPROVE THE ENVIRONMENT

Peterborough City Council has teamed up with the Cambridgeshire Real Nappy Network to give parents and carers the opportunity to try out a variety of new real cloth nappies free of charge for a two week period, as part of a new 'Keeping It Real' initiative.

The 'Keeping It Real' scheme is designed to save residents money, while at the same time encouraging them to use a more environmentally friendly option to disposable nappies.

In Britain around 9 million disposable nappies are thrown away each day, about a million tonnes a year. By using cloth nappies residents can significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Jacqui Warren, Waste and Recycling Officer for the city council, said, "As well as being easy to use, cloth nappies can save a family up to £400 from birth to potty and they really do reduce the amount of waste a family throws away each week."

Helen Coupe, Project Worker for the Cambridgeshire Real Nappy Network said, "The free trials are designed to show parents and carers just how effective these new cloth nappies are and how washing machines, tumble dryers and laundry services mean that they are now easy to wash and dry too."

The free trial kits, which are neatly packed into a nappy bucket contain five different types of nappies, three waterproof outer covers, floatable liners and nappy sanitiser complete with full instructions.
