Peterborough's Archaeology and Historic Environment

Peterborough City Council Archaeology Service (PCCAS) aims to
explore, protect, and promote the historic environment of the Peterborough
area.
Its chief functions are:
- the maintenance of a comprehensive inventory of Peterborough's archaeological heritage and historic landscape - the Peterborough City Council Historic Environment Record;
- the provision of advice to planners, developers and archaeological contractors working within the Unitary Authority area;
- the promotion of Peterborough's heritage through the provision of an information service, walks, talks, publications, exhibitions, events, etc;
- to encourage the beneficial management of Peterborough's historic landscape, by working in partnership with landowners, farmers, environmental agencies, etc.
PCCAS was created in 1998, following local government
reorganisation in Cambridgeshire, and is part of a nationwide
network of archaeological services within local government.
Peterborough has had a long history of archaeological investigation. Many finds
and excavation archives are held at Peterborough Museum. We
have detailed reports of past discoveries, and you can also
find information about current
investigations in the peterborough area on our news page.
We share the services of a Portable Antiquities Scheme
Finds Liaison Officer with Cambridgeshire County Council.
