Smoke - Bonfires
What's wrong with them?
Bonfires can cause a nuisance due to the smoke, smell and
smuts produced which can be irritating to neighbours. Emissions
from bonfires can cause problems for asthmatics or people with
heart conditions. The smoke can also cause annoyance to local
neighbours by preventing them enjoying their garden and reduce
visibility in the neighbourhood and on the roads.
They can cause air pollution
The burning of products may release pollutants such as carbon
monoxide dioxins and particles. Burning unsuitable materials
(plastic, rubber etc) can create unpleasant smell and release
poisonous components.
They have safety
concerns
Fires can easily spread if not contained and monitored. Piles
of garden waste can be home to wildlife or pets and it is important
to check before hand.
Bonfire guidelines

- Never leave your fire unattended.
Alternatives to incinerating /bonfires
Can I make a complaint about my neighbours bonfire to the council?
Firstly approach your neighbour they may not be aware they are
causing distress and a simple courtesy request may bring an end to
this problem. If this fails you can contact Peterborough
Environmental Health Department to discuss your concerns. However
unless the fire is a frequent event or on a large disruptive scale
only then will it be considered a nuisance in law.
