Peterborough City Council action on climate change
Climate change is now very prominent on the political
agenda. Media coverage is helping to raise awareness and
instigating action both at a local and global
level. Everyone in Peterborough has a part to play in reducing
the impact of climate change, but the council also acknowledges
that it must put its own house in order before it asks others to do
the same.

Consequently Peterborough City Council
has signed up to the
Nottingham Declaration on climate change which shows we
recognise that current and future council activities will have
a detrimental effect on the future environmental and socio-economic
prosperity of the UK, and therefore Peterborough. By signing
this agreement we have agreed to consider the impact of climate
change on all council services and put in a framework for future
action.

A climate change strategy has been
devised which will provide a framework for action
within our own areas of operation and ensure we take
a leading role in the fight against climate change.

An Inconvenient truth for Peterborough
In 2007 we created our own version of Al Gore's Oscar winning
documentary An
Inconvenient Truth for Peterborough which is a
short podcast which focuses on the local impact of
climate change in Peterborough.
Peterborough's Environment Capital aspiration
Peterborough has set itself an ambitious target to become the
acknowledged Environment Capital of the UK.
We already have much to build on;
- Peterborough is one of only four environment cities and one of only three sustainable transport demonstration towns
- The city boasts the largest cluster of environmental businesses in the country with our very own eco innovation centre
- In 2007/8 Peterborough had the highest recycling rate for any Unitary authority in the country and we can now recycle glass in our green bins
- Peterborough has been selected for a Carbon Challenge site which will deliver 450 dwellings on the city's south bank. All homes will be sustainable, environmentally friendly and zero carbon
- We are blooming great! The city won the "Best City for Anglia in Bloom" and a silver gilt award in 2007
- The BBC selected Peterborough as a Breathing Places city which aims to connect people to their local environment and make space for wildlife
