The Peterborough Festival - 2007

Twinning Anniversary Celebrations

BOURGES 50 Years - VIERSEN 25 YEARS

Saturday 30 June - Sunday 1 July 12 noon - 5pm Free Central Park

This year Peterborough celebrates the 50th anniversary of the twinning link with our French twin town Bourges. Come and join visitors from all Peterborough's twin towns to celebrate this momentous occasion in the grand Twinning Celebration marquee in Central Park for a twinkling twinning experience of exhibitions and stands telling the story of Peterborough's twinning links with Bourges spanning half a century.

The Peterborough Anglo French Association which supports the link as well as other organisations who have links with Bourges, including Kings School, Nene Valley Primary School, the Peterborough rowing club, and Peterborough Rotary Club, whose exchange with the Bourges rotary club has been running for 49 years, will be creating their own dazzling displays.

As well as celebrating this golden anniversary with Bourges we will also celebrate the silver anniversary of our twinning with German twin town Viersen.

The Peterborough Friends of Stadt Viersen have invited their partner group from Viersen to Peterborough for the 25th anniversary celebration. They will create a display about the link and German myths and legends - the theme of the Festival.

In support of the Festival theme, they will be dressing as famous characters from the Grimm brother's fairy tales and the Lorelei - legend of the Rhine and perform German music and songs.

The Hispanic Society of Peterborough will be telling us about the fantastical legendary figure of Don Quixote, the story was written by Miguel de Cervantes who was born in our Spanish twin town Alcala de Henares.

The International Links service will have a display of twinning events and activities that have taken place over the years with all our twin towns as well as information about our other twin towns Forli in Italy and Vinnitsa in Ukraine.

Other activities for you to enjoy will include interactive language learning provided by Peterborough College of Adult Education - if you've often thought about it now is your chance to have a go, a twin town quiz - find out how much you have learnt and have the chance to win a prize! Petanque - a very French pastime, flower arranging - create a special display, street artists and performers - to entertain you and more!

So come and join the celebrations - there will be plenty to see and do and the chance to learn something new!
