PETERBOROUGH'S DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION SET TO MOVE ON

Peterborough City Council has today announced, Monday, 6 March, that BillGoodwin, Director of Education, is to leave his post at the end of spring.

Mr Goodwin was appointed as the city council's first Director of Educationin July 1997, having previously been Assistant Chief Executive. He planned andestablished the city council's new Education department and has led theservice which has a budget of £80 million.

Mr Goodwin, said, "After three years in this demanding position I feel thatnow is the right time to move on from Peterborough and develop my careerelsewhere. I have enjoyed working with my many colleagues across the service andwould like to pay tribute to them for their support and achievements."

Paul Martin, the city council's Chief Executive, said, "Bill has led thecreation of the new Education department with enormous energy, dedication andcommitment. Already, we have seen a marked improvement in standards,particularly in primary schools, significant successes in establishing earlyyears and childcare provision and lifelong learning, including the beginnings ofa new university for Peterborough."

He added, "Posts at this level in local government are very demanding and Iunderstand Bill's wish to move on at this point in his career."

Peterborough City Council will be taking immediate steps to recruit MrGoodwin's successor.
