Recycle hazardous fluorescent light tubes, urges city council
Local residents are being urged to recycle fluorescent tubes
and energy saving light bulbs at Peterborough City Council's
household recycling centre at Welland Road, Dogsthorpe rather than
dumping them in ordinary household waste for disposal at landfill
sites.
"Fluorescent tubes are classified as hazardous because they
contain mercury, which is harmful to health and highly pollutant to
water and soil," said city council recycling officer Holly
Beckett.
Recycling processes can recover over 97 per cent of components
in fluorescent tubes, separating out the mercury, glass and
aluminium.
"Local residents are effectively helping us divert over 43 per
cent of household waste for recycling and composting," said Holly.
"Protecting our local environment is a priority for both the
city council and for our residents. Recycling fluorescent tubes is
another way of caring for our environment and preserving limited
resources."
Information on available disposal
sites is available.
