A library worker who stole more than £800 of CDs and
sold them on Ebay has been ordered to carry out 180 hours unpaid
work in the community at a hearing at Peterborough Magistrates
Court, on Monday 4 February 2008.
Lance Hemmings (38) of Jubilee Way, Crowland, near
Peterborough, who is a former assistant resources manager at
Central Library, Broadway, Peterborough, also received a 12-week
custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months and was ordered to pay
£75 in costs.
The court ordered Hemmings to pay £845.28 in
compensation to Peterborough City Council within seven days the
value of the stolen property. He was given 14 days to pay the
costs.
The court heard Hemmings was dismissed by Peterborough City
Council in December 2006 following an internal investigation and
the matter was referred to the police. He admitted taking items of
stock from the library and selling them for his own personal gain
on auction website E-bay.
Peterborough City Council's fraud and investigation manager
Diane Baker, said: "Peterborough City Council will not tolerate any
form of fraud or corruption. The council investigates all
allegations of wrong-doing and seek to bring offenders to
justice.
"Anyone who would like to report their concerns can telephone
