Young people from across the city have been bridging the
generation gap, learning new skills and having fun in a wide range
of activities organised by Peterborough City Council's young
people's service.
In a series of school holiday activities, young people spent
time with older people at a lunch club hosted by the Salvation
Army. They helped out in a variety of ways; setting tables, serving
lunches, clearing dishes, playing dominoes and chatting with older
people about what life was like when they were young. The young
people involved will receive 10 hour ASDAN youth award.
Other children and young people aged between eight and 19 took
part in peer tutoring sections to support other young people to
work towards an ASDAN award. They also helped with Dogsthorpe's
Sycamore Park Community Garden project, enjoyed a trip to
Scalextric World and took part in an activity day at Tallington,
including adventure activities such as dry slope skiing and
climbing.
Peterborough City Council's young people's service central
team locality manager Steven Pettican, said: "We are really keen to
support young people to make a positive contribution and both the
half-term break and Easter holiday projects achieved this.
"Alongside fun-based activities the young people will have
gained some valuable accreditation and most importantly, they'll
have given something back to the community."
Cllr Matthew Dalton, spokesman for young people, added: "Young
people are often criticised for not using their time wisely and for
not being in touch with older generations.
"The activities organised by the young people's service
brought young and older people together to enable them to break
down the barriers between different sections of the
community.
At the same time, these activities gave young people valuable
opportunities to make a positive contribution to the city while
learning new skills."
