Child Protection in Schools

 
All Local Authorities, schools and Further Education Colleges in England have responsibilities to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.  These responsibilities are set out in Department for Education and Skills guidance: Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education January 2007
 
Local Authorities have responsibilities at three levels:
 
Strategic Planning, coordinating delivery of services and allocating resources; working in partnership with other agencies and the Local Safeguarding Children Board
 
Support ensuring that maintained schools are aware of their responsibilities for safeguarding children; monitoring their performance; making available appropriate training, model policies and procedures; providing advice and support and facilitating links with other agencies
 
Operational taking responsibility for safeguarding children who are excluded from school, or who have not obtained a school place; involvement in dealing with allegations against staff and volunteers; and ensuring arrangements are in place to prevent unsuitable staff and volunteers

Training available for education staff from the Education Child Protection Service for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough

 
The Education Child Protection Service provides a range of training opportunities on the theme of safeguarding children for education staff, including specific training for designated staff in schools.

Safeguarding Procedures for the Education Service

 
The Safeguarding Procedures for the Education Service are supplementary to the Local Safeguarding Children Board Core Inter-Agency Safeguarding Procedures.  They apply to all Education establishments, including foundation and independent school and post-16 colleges.
 
The procedures are based on national requirements set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children HM Government 2006 and Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education DfES 2007.
 
The duty to follow the safeguarding procedures applies to:
  • All staff of Education establishments, both teaching and non-teaching
  • Advisory/support staff to Education establishments
  • School governors
  • Community education staff, both paid and voluntary
