School Transport
Everyday over 2,500 children are transported by Peterborough
City Council to primary and secondary schools in a range of
different vehicles.
The city council's Integrated Passenger Transport Unit
provides transport through a range of contracted services.
Contracted services are provided for journeys from home to school
and return during term time only. Some students may be issued with
Megariders which entitle them to travel on any Stagecoach or
subsidised city councils services. They can also
travel evening and weekends (during term time
only). Currently over 550 children travel to
school by public transport.
Transport providers are required to provide vehicles to meet
contract specifications and to provide a safe and reliable journey
to and from school. Schools, pupils and parents are expected to
work together to help the city council and its operators to fulfil
these roles. This includes the promotion of good behaviour.
The city council is always looking at ways of improving the
quality of service provided to its school children. Recently this
has included:-
- Purchase of two accessible vehicles to transport children with severe needs to out of city placements on a daily basis.
- Encouraging local taxi companies investing in wheelchair accessible tail-lift vehicles for school transport purposes.
- Vehicles with seat belts are used on all contracted transport.
- Reducing the maximum age of school vehicles to 10 years, unless the Council's maintenance engineers have approved the vehicle.
- Improved training of drivers and escorts.
- Introduced electronic payments for school transport - currently 87% of all payments are made electronically.
