26 July 2008 Cathedral Square

Come along and see what it's all about, and you never know you could get involved in something positive which could be a life changing decision.

The Sorted group was formed approximately six years ago with the objective to reduce retail theft within the city centre.  The group is made up of Loss Prevention Officers from city centre stores, Street Wardens, the Police and Peterborough Youth Offending Team.

The aims are:

  • To identify offenders and ascertain why they commit crimes.
  • To educate children through road shows to show the consequences of what might happen to them and their families if caught committing retail theft.  Also to show the effect of crime on retailers and the increased cost of goods and services that result.
  • Identify why they feel they have to commit a criminal act.

For the lead up to the event, we are planning to get three schools and a youth group involved to attract those from 11 to 16 years to write a song or poem that highlights why young people should stay away from crime and the consequences of being caught committing an offence.  It must have the acronym S.O.R.T.E.D and the phrase "Stamp out retail theft everyday" in the poem or song.  Songs must be no longer than three minutes.  The prize for the winning entry will be recoding time at Lite FM's studio to make a CD that will be played on the radio station.

The first road show took place in Cathedral Square in 2003 on the hottest day of the year.

The theme of this year's fun road show event is to demonstrate to young people the range of activities to partake in within the city, and that they do not need to get involved in crime because they are bored.  Other agencies will be highlighting activities all year round and not just in the school holidays.   A lot of other information for parents will be available, and staff will be there to answer any questions

Young people will be able to watch a short DVD, and if they can answer some simple questions will receive a prize.  A new DVD has been made by Princess and her team from the Young Peoples' Service, and her budding actors from the Voyager school.  The DVD was financed by the S.O.R.T.E.D/Peterborough City Safe radio link group.  There will also be the opportunity to have finger prints and photos taken by the police which young people can take away and keep.

Keith Doulton from Lite FM will be doing a live broadcast of the event on the day.
