An information pack aimed at helping retailers understand and
comply with the law where underage restricted sales are concerned
will be launched at Peterborough Town Hall on Tuesday 12 August at
2 pm.
The packs, which provide a comprehensive guide to underage
restricted sales, have been developed by Peterborough City
Council's trading standards and licensing teams, along with
Cambridgeshire Constabulary and the Peterborough Evening
Partnership (PEP).
Adrian Day, licensing manager at the city council, said:
"Retailers have to deal with a myriad of products where their sale
is restricted according to age and these information packs will
make sense of the law where they are concerned.
"Both the city council's licensing and trading standards
teams, along with police and the Peterborough Evening Partnership,
should be congratulated on producing such a comprehensive pack,
which will go a long way to helping retailers. I hope as many of
them as possible will join us for the launch at the Town
Hall."
Information contained within the packs, refer to a range of
products where the age of a potential customer applies to its sale.
These include: alcohol; cigarettes and tobacco products; fireworks;
knives, solvent and lighter refills; petrol; aerosol spray paints;
lottery tickets and scratch cards; videos and DVDs; and computer
games.
Community safety officer Katy Harris, from Bridge Street
Police Station, added: "The pack is part of a larger campaign to
tackle underage drinking, and associated crime and disorder, and we
are targeting off as well as on licensed premises.
"Police and partner agencies will also be carrying out test
purchasing operations, promoting Challenge 21 schemes and holding
joint inspection visits, which are designed to support staff in
creating safe retail environments and in building safer
communities."
The launch event will be held in the Bourges and Viersen rooms
at Peterborough Town Hall on Tuesday 12 August from 2 pm to 4 pm.
It will provide the ideal opportunity for retailers to meet
representatives from various agencies, including officers from
trading standards, licensing, police and the community safety team,
as well as pick up a copy of the pack. Refreshments will be
provided and Chief Superintendent Paul Phillipson, from
Cambridgeshire Constabulary, will make a short presentation.
Ends.
