People who would like an all over workout combining gentle,
physical and mental exercise, with the reward of healthy, tasty
food and that can commit a minimum of two to three hours per week
throughout the year, should consider getting an allotment with
Peterborough City Council.
Hundreds of people already enjoy the many benefits and with it
being National Allotments Week from Monday (11 August) to Sunday 17
August there has never been a better time to book your plot.
Allotment holders have the opportunity to grow organic fruit
and vegetables in season, reduce their food miles and help the
environment while experiencing the taste, freshness, variety and
choice not always available in the supermarkets.
Louise Wilcox, the city council's recreation manager, said:
"Allotments provide not only food and exercise, but also a place to
chill out, some where to observe and encourage nature and the
chance to meet interesting people and make new friends.
"Age, race, gender, belief, ability or experience is not an
issue as allotments are all-inclusive and are available to anyone
interested in growing their own. We have around 200 plots available
from 1,300 located at 24 sites across Peterborough and would love
to hear from anybody interested in taking one on."
All the sites are fenced and secured, water is provided from
standpipes and the city council allows sheds, greenhouses and
polytunnels subject to an application. Allotment holders might even
like to keep a few hens or rabbits and the city council can even
arrange to rotovate a new plot.
Allotments are rented on an annual basis and are based on a
standard 10 pole (300 sq yd) plot. Smaller or larger plots are
charged pro rata. The standard charge is £50 per year, with
@ctive card concessions available.
For further information on how to sign-up for an allotment,
