Peterborough City Council will mark the completion of a major
refurbishment of Werrington Sports and Recreation Centre with a
free open weekend on Saturday and Sunday, 6 and 7 September.
Following the investment of £280,000 from a
£740,000 funding pot to improve sports and leisure facilities
across Peterborough, people will have the opportunity to enjoy free
classes on both days between 9 am and 5 pm. In addition, there will
be a tour of the new Planet Pulse gym, the chance for people to try
their hand at badminton, squash or tennis, as well as a range of
indoor and outdoor activities for children.
Chris Finch, assistant manager at Werrington Sports Centre,
said: "We're really excited about the refurbishment and what that
will mean for our regular users. However, we are also keen for
those people who may not have visited us before to come along to
this free weekend and find out for themselves what a fantastic
range of activities Werrington Sports Centre offers."
Work at the Peterborough City Council-run sports centre will
include a refurbishment of the Planet Pulse gym and installation of
new sports equipment. The sports hall, squash courts, changing
rooms, foyer and corridors will be refurbished and the carpet and
fencing on the astro turf pitch will be replaced.
The sports centre has been partially closed since the end of
July for the six-week make-over, with the sports hall, squash
courts and gym facilities closed to the public. However, many of
the community group meetings and fitness classes, which take place
Monday to Friday, between 5 pm and 9 pm, have not been
disrupted.
Councilllor Matthew Lee, cabinet member for community
services, said: "The council has set aside £740,000 to spend
on improving sports services across the whole of the city this
year. Some of the money has been used to give Werrington Sports
Centre a much-needed refurbishment and upgrade to improve its
service to the community. Money will also be used to provide
upgrades at Bushfield Sports Centre in Orton and other sports and
leisure facilities across the city.
"As a council we are committed to providing first class sport
and leisure facilities for Peterborough's residents. By providing
sports facilities fit for the 21st Century we are
delivering in our aim of achieving the best possible health and
well-being for residents."
During the refurbishment work, residents are able to use
facilities at other city council-owned sports centres, including
Bushfield Sports Centre, Orton Centre and Regional Fitness and
Swimming Centre, before it fully re-opens on Wednesday 4
September
