Business Transformation
What is Business Transformation?
Business transformation is about fundamentally
changing the way the council works and working smarter so that
services are better, quicker, cheaper and simpler to access.
This is in response to Sir Peter Gershon's review
of local government spending in July 2004 where local
governments were set a target to achieve annual efficiency gains of
2.5% per annum over the next three years, totalling £6.45
billion by 2008.
The targets for Peterborough City Council,
excluding schools, were to make savings of £3.5 million in
2007/2008. This was achieved and it is expected
that further savings of £3.7 million will be made in
2008/2009 and £5 million during 2009/2010. Peterborough
schools have separate targets monitored directly by the Department
for Education. Please see 'Useful links' below
for a copy of the original Gershon report.
The transformation vision for Peterborough is focused
on:
- transforming service quality
- improving organisational productivity
- improving customer service
- motivating employees
Paul Tonks, head of Peterborough's business
transformation programme said recently:
"This is good news for residents.
The money saved will be reinvested straight back into vital local
services which directly benefit local people. The
focus on efficiency has already enabled our Cabinet to implement a
record low council tax increase of 1.4% that is sustainable over
the next three years, and to invest an extra £1.2 million in
making Peterborough cleaner and greener."
"The council is always looking
for ways to be more efficient and make best use of our resources
which is why business transformation is central to the
council's financial strategy and vision to becoming an 'excellent'
council. I am absolutely committed to supporting the programme and
seeing local people, as well as employees of the council
benefiting."
