A £1.3 million footbridge over the A1139 Fletton Parkway
linking the Orton Malborne and Hampton areas of Peterborough is now
open providing a vital link for residents.
The scheme has been funded by O&H Hampton Ltd and its
construction coordinated by Peterborough City Council and by
O&H's technical manager Malcolm Johnson. The bridge has been
built while the dual carriageway parkway has been widened from two
lanes to three lanes between junctions two and three, also
benefiting motorists.
Roger Tallowin, general manager of O&H Hampton Limited,
said: "O&H see the completion of this footbridge as another
link in the connectivity of the city allowing pedestrians and
cyclists safe passage from retail amenities to links with
Peterborough's many green parklands."
The footbridge, which received planning approval in February
2005, is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and those with
mobility impairments and incorporates CCTV security measures.
Residents have already been enjoying the new link while the final
finishing touches are due to be completed in the next few
weeks.
David Farquhar, head of transport and engineering at the city
council, said: "This footbridge provides a vital link between
the Hampton and Orton areas. I am delighted to see it now open and
being enjoyed by so many residents."
Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, cabinet member for environment at
the city council, added: "The new footbridge is a great example of
partnership working and will encourage people to adopt more
sustainable travel options and offer safer journeys."
