Peterborough Museum is set to reveal the dreadful true story
of the slave trade and its abolition with a talk on Thursday 9
October 2008 at 7.30 pm.
Local history speaker Don Chiswell will give a talk on how the
slave trade developed and Britain's role in it over the centuries.
The talk outlines how the trade worked, with the 'Triangular Trade'
of British goods being exchanged for slaves on the west coast of
Africa, before being taken and sold in the West Indies and America.
It also considers how attitudes changed and the how the movement
for the abolition was eventually successful.
Stuart Orme, museum visitor services and marketing manager for
Peterborough City Council, said: "October is Black History month,
therefore it is fitting that the museum can offer a talk on the
story of the Slave Trade and how this dreadful period of human
misery ended over 200 years ago."
Tickets, available on the door, are £4 for adults and
£2 for children and concessions. For more details call the
museum (01733) 343329 or email museum@peterborough.gov.uk
