Peterborough City Council's business regulation team is
warning businesses and consumers to be wary if they receive a text
message notifying them that a parcel is awaiting delivery.
A company is using the scam to persuade recipients to call a
premium rate telephone number incurring costs of up to £10
when there is no parcel awaiting delivery.
Jane Day, Peterborough City Council's senior adviser and
education officer, said: "If you are not expecting a parcel then do
not respond to text messages sent to your mobile phone. If you are
expecting a parcel then check with the sender to find out when it
was sent and by which method."
People who have been a victim of this scam should report the
matter to OFCOM by calling 020 7981 3040 or 0300 123 3333.
Alternatively people can visit www.ofcom.org.uk.
Ends.
