Stray And Lost Dogs
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 dogs should not be
allowed to roam public areas unattended and must always be under
control of an owner. They must also wear a collar and disc with
owners details clearly marked upon it. Stray dogs will foul, pack
up to form larger groups of dogs, and may cause a road traffic
accident for which the owner will be liable. Many stray dogs become
scared, confused and aggressive.
We have appointed officers to humanely deal with lost and
stray dogs. Dogs will be detained under this Act for 7 days. It is
the responsibility of the owner to report their dog missing to the
police or to our service. If we have contact details available by a
disc, lost report or microchip we will contact the owner and inform
them the dog is detained and safe. Under this act there is a fine
to pay for the return of a lost/stray dog. Owners will be informed
of this cost when contact is made with them.
If a dog is not claimed back within 7 days it then becomes the
property of our contracted kennels and is then assessed for
suitable re-homing.
We liaise with the police in the collection and co-ordination
of lost reports made to them.
Dogs are detained in quality kennelling outside the
Peterborough area.
