Environmental Protection Act 1990

Under the this act a dog should not be allowed to stray as dogs may form packs and attack innocent passers by. They will defecate where they please and this causes a health hazard.
 
Many road traffic accidents are caused by stray dogs, where the owner may be liable for damages and injuries that may occur. A lost dog should be reported to the Police and Local Authority. There is a fine to claim the dog back. Some dogs are never claimed back or even reported missing. These dogs go forward for assessment for rehoming. We can advise on rehoming centres, and specific breed rescue centres.

Dangerous Dogs Act 1991

Dogs must not be allowed to be dangerously out of control in a public place. Certain fighting breeds, such as the Pit Bull Terrier have severe restrictions on them. Further information is available from the Dog and Pest service. (Please call us on 01733 453557).

 

Control of Dogs Order 1992

Every dog, while in a highway or place of public resort, must wear a collar with the name and address of its owner inscribed on it or a plate or badge attached to it.

 

Animals Act of 1971

Provides information on owners of animals and those having control of them have a duty to take reasonable care to see that injury or damage is not caused by their animals straying on to the road.

 

Abandonment of Animals Act 1960 and also the Protection of Animals Act 1911

Dogs should not be left in circumstances which would cause them undue suffering such as in cars on hot days. Although windows may be partially opened and water left down for them, the inside of a car will reach very high temperatures. We will liaise with the police on these matters under the Act.

 

Dogs (Fouling of land) Act 1996

It is an offence for someone not to clear up after their dogs faeces in open land accessible to the public. Further information is available.
