What will happen on the wedding day at Peterborough Register Office?
When to arrive
The bride and groom with the guests should arrive at the
office at least 10 minutes before the appointed time of the
marriage.
Who can attend the wedding?
The marriage and ceremony room seats 30 guests in
addition to the bride and groom. This number cannot be exceeded for
safety reasons and additional guests must wait outside.
Weddings need to be witnessed by two adults. Both of them must
be able to understand the marriage ceremony in English. If either
the bride or the groom does not understand English, someone should
be asked to act as an interpreter.
The marriage room is accessible for wheelchair users. Guide
dogs are welcome to accompany their owner. Within the marriage room
a loop system operates for those with hearing difficulties.
What happens before the ceremony can begin?
The registrar will come to the waiting room to invite the
bride and groom into the marriage and ceremony room. If
the fee of £43.50 for the ceremony and one marriage
certificate has not already been paid in advance, then this
will need to be paid to the registrar. Payment can be
made by cheque, credit card or cash (correct amount please).
Cheques should be made payable to Peterborough City Council.
The registrar will then check the details that will be entered
into the marriage register.
The information required is similar to that given at the time
of giving notice of intention to marry. In addition, the registrar
will ask for the full name of either your natural
father, your adoptive father if you have been legally adopted,
or your step father, and his present or last known
occupation.
If rings are to be exchanged they may be placed on the ring
cushion on the table or the best man may bring them forward as part
of the ceremony.
