FLAGS OF ALL NATIONS FESTIVAL PROMISES CULTURAL EXTRAVAGANZA
An entertainment extravaganza will explode on to
Peterborough's social calendar this summer when the Peterborough
Festival brings a two-week feast of music, art, theatre and
cultural events to the city from Saturday 25 June to Sunday 10
July.
The festival programme devoted to the theme Flags of All
Nations will be launched at the Peterborough Moat House Hotel on
Wednesday 11 May with a reception at 12 noon followed by
opportunities for interviews and photographs at 1.00 pm.
The festival will begin with a dazzling carnival procession
through Peterborough city centre with colourful floats and dancers
parading to the Embankment for a packed opening weekend programme
of free events. Performances will range from Sri Lanka
dancers and rock legends Showaddywaddy and The Rubettes to American
Civil War re-enactments, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a
boat rally.
The following two weeks will be action packed with lunchtime
recitals, theatre performances, an International It's a Knockout,
fishing championships, ladies' football tournament, classic car
rally, international food market and lots more.
"The Peterborough Festival has progressively grown in stature
to become a major regional event, attracting visitors from a wide
area," said festival organiser Colin Wise. "It makes an
important contribution to Peterborough's plans to be acknowledged
internationally as a city that offers an excellent quality of life
for its people.
"The festival is a partnership between the city council and
the local business community and demonstrates how major cultural
events can promote Peterborough as a city that wants to grow
successfully by building on its proud heritage."
Nigel Thornton, acting editor of the Evening Telegraph, one of
the festival's major sponsors, added, "The Evening Telegraph has
always been an enthusiastic supporter of the Peterborough
Festival. We believe it makes an invaluable contribution to
the city's cultural life and is vital to promoting a positive
perception of Peterborough.
"This year's programme offers a vibrant and varied mix of
events and The Evening Telegraph is proud to be a sponsor."
The festival's principal sponsor for six successive years is
national regeneration agency English Partnerships.
Following the launch event on Wednesday brochures giving full
details of the festival programme will be available from all main
city council offices, libraries, sports centres, the Museum and Art
Gallery, Key Theatre and the Tourist Information Centre.
Ends.
