Environmental Health

Environmental Health is about making Peterborough a safe and pleasant city in which to live, work and visit. We have specialists that are responsible for the delivery of a broad range of statutory services that contribute to the promotion of a healthy and safe environment for residents, visitors and workers in Peterborough. The service contributes to local priorities set out in our Community Strategy, through the Local Area Agreement, and the Corporate Plan.

We take firm but fair regulatory action to protect public health, the environment and to promote community well being. Besides enforcing standards relating to food, health and safety and environmental protection in local shops, businesses and communities, we respond to many requests for service each year from the public and businesses.

Clean

We carry out investigations and enforcement to tackle neighbourhood problems and to protect public health such as: dog-fouling, pollution, rubbish accumulations, smoke from chimneys and bonfires, noise complaints and pest infestations.

Safe

We carry out inspections to make sure that businesses know how to comply with the law and to check that they do. We are legally responsible for enforcing a very wide range of legislation including:

  • Food hygiene and safety including food poisoning and infectious diseases.
  • Health and safety at work.
  • Environmental protection and authorised industrial processes.
  • Pollution such as noise, air quality, contaminated and rubbish.
  • Pest control.
  • Stray dogs and dog fouling.
  • Smoke free compliance.
