Background
The white paper 'Secure Borders, Safe
Haven: integration with diversity in Modern Britain' published in
February 2002, set out the government's proposals for enhancing the
significance of the acquisition of British citizenship.
The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, which
received Royal Assent on 7, November 2002, includes provisions
which require that all applicants aged 18 years and over for
naturalisation or registration as a British citizen take a
citizenship oath and pledge at a citizenship ceremony.
Applicants may choose to use Peterborough's Nationality checking service to help with
the application process.
Peterborough City Council delivers these ceremonies for local
citizenship applicants on behalf of the Home Office and these are
administered by Peterborough Register Office.
Ceremonies are held monthly at Peterborough Town Hall in
Bridge Street. They commence at 2pm on Tuesday afternoons either in
the Council Chamber or in the Reception Room.

The Superintendent Registrar will officiate and the Mayor will
give a short speech to welcome the citizens. At the heart of the
ceremony will be an oath of allegiance and this has been coupled
with a new citizenship pledge. This group ceremony will be in the
style of a university graduation, with the new citizens repeating
the oath and pledge after the Superintendent Registrar and then
coming forward in turn to receive their certificate.
In addition the citizens will be asked to sign a register and
will receive an information pack. There will be an approved
photographer available and light refreshments will be served
afterwards.
If new citizens prefer to have a private ceremony, this can be
arranged. Private ceremonies can be held at either the Register
Office or at any of the Register Office Approved
Venues. However there is a charge for private ceremonies and
these are as follows:
| Monday - Friday | £125 |
| Saturday | £150 |
| Sunday | £200 |
