Public Rights of Way
There are more than 250 km of public rights of way in and
around Peterborough which are managed by Peterborough City
Council.
There are three different types of rights of way, to which
different legal rights apply:
- footpaths
- bridleways
- byway open to all traffic
See the rights of way types page
for further information.
The Natural Environment Team within the Planning Department is
responsible for the public rights of way network. This
includes:
- maintaining the definitive map and statement (the legal record)
- asserting the public right to use public rights of way
The rights of way network does not include:
- footways (pavements alongside roads and many of the surfaced paths within the city area), please contact the Highways Group
- footpaths within parks and other areas of public open space, please contact Parks and Open Spaces
Peterborough City Council is not responsible for the
following:
- rights of way outside the Peterborough authority area, for which you should contact the relevant local council
- private rights of way (easements) for which you are advised to check the deeds to your property and to take legal advice
Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP)
The Council has set out their vision for the public rights of
way network over the next 10 years with the production of a Rights of Way Improvement Plan.
