Sustainable Travel Demonstration Town
As traffic levels grow and congestion worsens, it is vital
that a greater proportion of trips are made by sustainable means of
travel. The Department for Transport funded Sustainable Travel
Demonstration Town Project will identify measures to improve and
promote sustainable means of travel such as walking, cycling, bus
and the wise use of cars. Improving conditions for these means of
travel and providing much better travel information to people
underpin the project. Peterborough is one of only three towns to
receive DFT funding for this important national project.
The schemes outlined have been carefully assessed and chosen
so as to form a complementary and comprehensive package of measures
that will create the foundation of the Peterborough Sustainable
Travel Demonstration Town.
The overall project package is designed to provide real travel
choice options for travellers. Targeted information forms the
foundation of the project with marketing and promotion playing a
vital role in the dissemination of this information. A blend of
soft measures, combined with sustained infrastructure improvements,
will allow real progress to be made towards a truly integrated
sustainable transport network and provide an example for other
towns and cities to follow.
Each scheme provides a key individual contribution to the
overall project. More importantly, each scheme provides linkage to
other schemes to establish a network of measures that will drive
further development and investment with sustainable travel options
in the city. It is envisaged that the real benefit will come from
the linkages between initiatives.
The measures outlined contain and expand on areas of best
practice throughout the country, as well as initiatives already
underway in Peterborough, and bring these together to form a
package drawn from best practice within the sustainable transport
field.
