Highway Maintenance

Peterborough City Council is responsible for the maintenance of just over 509 miles (820-km) of highway network. The nature of this network is varied including high-speed dual strategic routes, heavily built up inner city areas and rural routes. The basic make up of the network is approximately as follows:

Road Class Total km Built Up Length
Principal A Roads 44.05 miles 13.86 miles
B-Roads 30.94 miles 18.14 miles
C-Roads 97.12 miles 30.82 miles
Unclassified 335.85 miles 25.41 miles
Back Lanes 0.50 miles 0.50 miles

In addition to the above carriageway network there is the associated footways and a significant network of cycleways and footpaths.

As Highway Authority for the Peterborough Area the Council has the duty to maintain the highway network in a safe condition. It meets this requirement by making regular inspections of the network and undertaking the work necessary to ensure the safety of all highway users.

However, damage to the highway can occur between inspections. If you become aware of any damage or defect could you please report it to the Council. The contact details are shown below. These contact details should also be used if you need advice on highway matters.
