Highway Maintenance
Peterborough City Council is responsible for the maintenance
of just over 509 miles (820-km) of highway network. The nature of
this network is varied including high-speed dual strategic routes,
heavily built up inner city areas and rural routes. The basic make
up of the network is approximately as follows:
| Road Class | Total km | Built Up Length |
| Principal A Roads | 44.05 miles | 13.86 miles |
| B-Roads | 30.94 miles | 18.14 miles |
| C-Roads | 97.12 miles | 30.82 miles |
| Unclassified | 335.85 miles | 25.41 miles |
| Back Lanes | 0.50 miles | 0.50 miles |
In addition to the above carriageway network there is the associated footways and a significant network of cycleways and footpaths.
As Highway Authority for the Peterborough Area the Council has
the duty to maintain the highway network in a safe condition. It
meets this requirement by making regular inspections of the network
and undertaking the work necessary to ensure the safety of all
highway users.
However, damage to the highway can occur between inspections.
