Frequently Asked Questions for
Commercial Waste and Recycling
Does Peterborough City
Council offer recycling facilities to
businesses?
Yes, Peterborough City Council has offered a recycling service
as well as a refuse collection service to trade customers for a
number of years.
Is there a financial incentive to
businesses to recycle?
It is cheaper to recycle then to send waste to a landfill
site. The councils trade recycling collections are cheaper
than its equivalent refuse collection and disposal charges.
I work from home and
only generate a small amount of waste. Can I use
this service?
The council is happy to deal with all businesses regardless of
size.
Is Peterborough City Council the
only provider of trade waste and recycling
services?
No, other providers may be found in
publications such as the Yellow Pages.
Why is the waste collection service not covered by Business Rates?
As a business, you are able to choose who provides your waste
collection service. You can choose a private contractor to provide
the service for you. For this reason, the cost of collecting waste
from businesses is not included in the Business Rates, otherwise
you would be paying twice. If you ask us to collect the waste, we
are required to provide you with this service at a reasonable
charge. If you do choose to have your waste collected by a private
contractor, you must make sure that you are meeting your 'duty of care'.
How can I arrange to use the service?
Each customer will need to enter into a contract before the service can start. For more information or to arrange for one of our staff to visit you to assess your needs and advise you of the likely cost please contact us via Peterborough Direct on 01733 747474 or email refuse@peterborough.gov.uk.
