Other Information
Most daytime bus services in Peterborough are operated
commercially without any support from Peterborough City Council.
These services are registered with the Traffic Commissioners, a
government body responsible for the monitoring of bus services, and
can be altered by the operator by giving a minimum of 56 days
notice to the Commissioners. There is a requirement for
notification of these alterations to be displayed one week before
the service changes.
Under the Transport Act 1985, local authorities have a duty to
provide socially required public transport services where they are
not provided commercially. When determining if a bus service
receives subsidy, the local authority will consider potential
passenger numbers, particularly workers and scholars, to assess if
it is appropriate to fund a particular service. This will be
determined by the cost per passenger journey. Further details
concerning the funding of bus services can be found in the Peterborough Bus Strategy.
The majority of evening and Sunday services and some rural
services are operated with financial support from Peterborough City
Council. These services are also registered with the Traffic
Commissioners and cannot be altered without the consent of
Peterborough City Council. A number of rural services are operated
with financial support
from other local authorities and
funding from central government.
