5 star toilets

One of Peterborough City Council's excellent public toilets in the Car Haven Car Park has been awarded a 5 Star honour in the National "Loo of the Year Awards".  The initiative seeks to find the best "away from home" toilets within the UK.  The annual awards are organised and judged by the British Toilet Association (BTA), who have been identifying quality toilet facilities since 1987.

Peterborough City Council have no statutory duty to provide public toilets but has chosen to improve and enhance our infrastructure of facilities as part of our Environmental Policy Overview.  This action is a move away from UK trends of toilet closures.

Our aim is to provide residents, local communities and visitors to Peterborough with clean, hygienic and safe toilets that also feature baby changing/child friendly services, whilst taking into account the Disability Discrimination Act (including compliance with BS8300).  These upgrades have provided the users with state of art facilities that match what is usually expected within shopping malls or private business establishments.

Councillor Murphy said "I am delighted to see the completion of these toilets.  People will notice a significant improvement to those that were previously available and recognise our commitment to providing people with first-class facilities".

At our latest refurbished toilets at Northminster Car Park you will be welcomed by a full time member of staff, porcelain fittings, mirrors, music and heating throughout which really makes your visit a pleasant and safe experience.

Peterborough City Council operates eight public conveniences around the Peterborough area. Most of the conveniences are open between 7:30 am and 8:00 pm.

The St Peters Arcade Disabled Toilet facility, located in the city centre has been refurbished and has achieved a five star award from the British Toilet Association's 'Loo of the Year' competition for two years running.

FAQ's

  (120 KB, 1 pages)

Where can I get a RADAR key?
RADAR (The Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation) www.radar.org.uk offers a National Key Scheme (NKS) to offer independent access to disabled persons to around 7,000 locked public toilets around the country.

RADAR keys are available from the cash office at Bayard Place, Broadway, Peterborough - price £2.75.

Why are the underground toilets in Cathedral Square closed?
Due to non compliance within the Disability Discrimination Act these facilities are unsuitable for use by all members of our society.

What is the law on urinating in the street?
This behaviour is anti social and causes problems for many businesses and offices in central Peterborough.  If the police witness this behaviour the perpetrator may be issued with a fixed penalty fine.  Be smart and use the toilet before you leave a venue.

Why are some of your public toilets closed?
We close some public toilets in the winter months because they are not used very often out of season.  Sometimes we have to close them because of vandalism or for emergency repairs and improvements.  We never close a toilet unless we have to.

Can you repair a broken toilet?
Let us know what is wrong and we will tackle the problem right away.

When do you clean toilets?
We clean all toilets at least once a day. Toilets which have attendants are cleaned throughout the day.

Can you do anything about anti social behaviour or misuse of your public toilets?
We work closely with the police in tackling anti-social behaviour.  We choose strong fixtures and fittings to resist vandalism.  If you witness any anti-social behaviour or abuse of our toilets please contact the police in the first instance.

I want to report a problem with a public toilet.  What details do you need to know?
We need to know the nature of the problem, which toilet block is affected - male, female, disabled or unisex, if there are any electrical defects or flooding.  If the problem is to do with anti-social behaviour, please call the police right away.  If you are unable to do this, give us the details and we will pass them on.
