Street Cleansing Services
Peterborough City Council is working hard to create a better
street environment for everyone. Our first objective is to deliver
clean, tidy streets throughout the City, 365 days of the
year.
Cleansing operations are conducted by the Contract Services
Department.
Strategy including community liaison, promotional materials and clean-ups is carried out by Environmental Services.
Streets are cleaned in line with the current Environmental
Protection Act 1990 Litter Code of Practice.
The street cleansing programme
This incorporates all of the following:

- community clean-ups and events
- education
- emergency cleansing of roads following an accident
- emptying and cleansing of all litter bins and dog bins
- litter picking
- manual sweeping
- mechanical sweeping (roads, car parks and other hard surfaces)
- mini-mechanical sweeping for footpaths and smaller restrictive areas
- peterborough market cleansing
- removal of dead animals
- removal of flytipping
- removal of graffiti
- removal of leaf and blossom fall
- removal of weeds and unwanted vegetation
- safe collection and disposal (by trained operatives) of
discarded and dumped
needles and syringes - washing and cleansing of pedestrian areas

Washing and Cleansing of Pedestrian Areas
This activity is undertaken as and when required. The work is
carried out in the early mornings for Health and Safety reasons,
making use of the graffiti high pressure hot water washer.
