Conservation Area Character Appraisals

Peterborough City Council has 29 Conservation Areas.
They have been selected because each one has a special character
which it is desirable to preserve or enhance.
The City Council is advised to review its conservation areas
periodically to ensure that they have up to date appraisals which
define their special interest. The City Council is currently
preparing conservation area character appraisals and management
plans for all conservation areas.
The purpose of appraisals is to:
- ensure that the City Council's policies are protecting the character of an area
- provide a basis for making informed development control decisions about development that affects the character of a conservation area
- identify enhancement opportunities
The appraisals are not intended to be comprehensive and the
omission of any particular building, feature or space should not be
taken to imply that it is of no interest.
Each character appraisal will:
- identify the area's special interest and character
- review the conservation area boundaries
- review the need for additional planning controls
- establish a measurable built environment baseline to allow re-survey so that changes over time can be accurately identified, measured and management plan adjusted
- make recommendations in a management plan to ensure the area's special qualities are retained and enhanced
Each character appraisal and management plan will be will
be adopted as City Council approved guidance and be a material
consideration when making planning decisions and considering other
changes affecting the area to ensure that its special character and
appearance is not harmed.
