Listed Buildings

Listed buildings are protected structures that are deemed to be of local, regional and national importance for their historical and architectural significance.

Peterborough has a wide range of historic buildings. The most important are included by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in the Statutory List of "buildings of special architectural or historic interest".

The Peterborough District has over 1060 listed buildings which can be viewed  on Hawkeye, which is Peterborough City Council's interactive mapping system (look for Information Layouts/Built Environment/ select Listed Buildings/select DISPLAY ON MAP button). The Statutory List can be inspected at Planning Services, Bridge House, Town Bridge, Peterborough.  Peterborough City Council is currently preparing a database (complete with photographs) of all listed buildings in the District.  At present the Images of England website (operated by English Heritage) offer a limited photographic database of some listed buildings within the District.

Officers from Planning Services offer advice to owners of listed buildings, including guidance on the need for listed building consent for any alternations and the likely acceptability of proposals.

A range of frequently asked questions and answers have been compiled on listed buildings which may answer your queries.  Further information is also provided by English Heritage.
