Listed Buildings
Listed buildings are protected structures that are deemed to
be of local, regional and national importance for their historical
and architectural significance.
Peterborough has a wide range of historic
buildings. The most important are included by the Secretary of
State for Culture, Media and Sport in the Statutory List of
"buildings of special architectural or historic
interest".
The Peterborough District has over 1060 listed buildings which
can be viewed
on Hawkeye, which is Peterborough City Council's interactive
mapping system (look for Information Layouts/Built Environment/
select Listed Buildings/select DISPLAY ON MAP button). The
Statutory List can be inspected at Planning Services, Bridge House,
Town Bridge, Peterborough. Peterborough City Council is
currently preparing a database (complete with photographs) of all
listed buildings in the District. At present the
Images
of England website (operated by English Heritage) offer a
limited photographic database of some listed buildings within the
District.
Officers from Planning Services offer advice to owners of
listed buildings, including guidance on the need for listed
building consent for any alternations and the likely acceptability
of proposals.
