Tree Preservation and Trees in Conservation Areas

Some 2,370 individual trees, 320 groups, 23 woodlands and 52
areas in Peterborough are protected by Tree Preservation Orders
(TPO).
In addition trees within the City's 29
Conservation Areas are protected if their stem diameter is 7.5
cm or over, when measured at 1.5 metres above ground level.
A tree preservation order may cover:
- any type of tree including hedgerow trees (but not hedges, bushes or shrubs)
- single trees
- groups of trees
- woodlands
A tree preservation order will usually specify the location and species of all trees covered by the Order and the property affected. The existence of a TPO affecting a property does not automatically mean that all trees at that address or on a specific site will be protected.
Further
information is available from the Office of the Deputy Prime
Minister.
Before works are carried out on trees:
- permission is needed when a tree is protected by a tree preservation order
- notice must be given of works to trees in a Conservation Area (subject to size of tree)
Details can be found on the Applications for Works to Trees page.
To find out if any particular tree is protected please see the
contact details and office hours.
