Council Owned Trees and Woodland
The Trees and Woodland Team is responsible for over one
million trees throughout the City, villages and surrounding
district. If you would like a Council tree to be inspected see the
Trees and Woodland Services A-Z entry for
contact details and office hours.
Trees on private land are dealt with by the Natural
Environment Team. See the Tree Preservation Services A-Z entry for
contact details and office hours or the tree
preservation orders webpage for further details.
Tree management in the City varies from areas of semi-natural
ancient woodland to newly planted saplings. Details for all these
trees are being added to a new tree database which will include
their age, type, location, size and history.
Ancient Woodland
The City owns and manages 37 hectares of
ancient woodland. The oldest of which can be traced back to having
continuous woodland cover for over 1000 years.A detailed management plan is being drawn up to assure the
care and protection of these important areas for future
generations.
Shelterbelts
Throughout the 1970's and 80's, as the
City expanded, 250 hectares of new woodland was planted screening
residential areas and business areas as well as lining all the main
parkways through the City. This woodland is now maturing and
creating important areas for recreation and wildlife.Street Trees
The street trees are mainly in the older
districts of Peterborough and are managed on a four year cycle. To
do this the Council uses a mixture of both modern and traditional
methods to preserve the trees and character of the streets in which
they grow.Village and Rural Trees
As well as the trees in the City there
are many fine specimens in the surrounding villages and
countryside.
