Reading Buddies

"A child in my class hasn't spoken to an adult for three years but is now reading with his Reading Buddy. It is a fantastic initiative, the children love it."

Why Reading Buddies?

Reading out loud helps improve children's literacy, and that's why we started the Reading Buddies campaign in Peterborough.

The scheme has also helped make parents, carers, and community members more aware of the importance of supporting reading and writing.

How it works

Businesses in Peterborough volunteer staff, who we train to go into schools for an hour a week to read with children one-to-one. The scheme has now expanded to include parents and sixth form students who can become reading buddies at participating schools.

The story so far

We now have over 300 reading buddies in 47 schools across the city!
