The International Links Service organises
different events which involve people from our twin towns. Some of
these events have formed part of the yearly Peterborough
Festival.
In 2002, we organised an arts project funded by
Awards for All, the Embassy of Spain and the local Spanish
company Porcelanosa, which involved two artists from our twin town
Alcalá de Henares in
Spain visiting Peterborough to work with five groups from Jack
Hunt School, Stanground College, Bretton Woods School, The Goldhay
Group and the Hindu community to produce five cabezudos
(big heads) representing Queens of England or famous women leaders.
Heads produced included Elizabeth II, Mary Queen of Scots, Anne of
Cleves, Katharine of Aragon, and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The
cabezudos took part in the Festival parade and were displayed in a
marquee set up to tell the story of how they were made. The event
was attended by His Excellency, the Ambassador of Spain.
El Teatro del Finikito from our twin town
Alcalá de Henares in Spain came to perform at
the Key Theatre in 2003. In 2004 we invited flag wavers and
acrobatic pizza chefs from our twin town Forli in Italy to
perform during the Festival. In 2005, we invited a ladies' football
team from Forli to play in a tournament in
Peterborough.
We also have a marquee every year during the
opening weekend of the Festival with activities and displays which
promote our twin town links.
In addition we also organise for local groups
and individuals to take part in events in our twin towns.
Previously, a ladies' football team, a gymnastic team, and athletes
took part in a mini olympics style tournament in our twin town
Viersen in Germany. We have helped local groups arrange trips to
perform in our twin towns.
