What is an Extended Payment?

An Extended Payment is an extra four weeks Housing Benefit and / or Council Tax Benefit.

Who is entitled to claim an Extended Payment?

1. You must already be in receipt of Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Benefit.

2. You must have been receiving Income Support (IS), Jobseekers Allowance (Income Based)(JSA(IB)), Incapacity Benefit (IBN) or Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) immediately prior to your claim for an Extended Payment.

3. Your IS / JSA(IB) / IBN / SDA must have ended due to you or your partner starting work, or increasing hours or wages of an existing job.

4. You must have either;

a) Been in receipt of IS / JSA(IB) for at least 26 weeks prior to your claim for an Extended Payment. This would include any previous periods while you were in receipt of Jobseekers Allowance (Contribution Based). Periods of IS and JSA can be mixed as long as they are continuous for the full 26 week period prior to the claim.

OR

b) Been in receipt of IBN / SDA for at least 26 weeks prior to your claim for an Extended Payment. Periods of IBN and SDA can be mixed as long as they are continuous for the full 26 week period prior to the claim.

 5. The job you have commenced or change is expected to last more than five weeks.

If you meet all 5 criteria then you may qualify for an Extended Payment.

Note: If your Income Support or Jobseekers Allowance has ended because you have been advised to claim Pension Credit then you may be entitled to a 'Continuing Payment' of up to four weeks. Please contact our office for further information.

How can I apply for an Extended Payment?

A request for an Extended Payment can be made in writing at our Customer Service Centre, at Bayard Place, or over the telephone within 4 weeks of the change in order for you to qualify.

What would happen if I wish to change address during the four weeks of the Extended Payment period?

If an extended payment is agreed a four-week period of Housing and/or Council Tax Benefit will be paid. This includes any change in address that occurs where you continue to have a liability at the new address. This will apply even if you move out of this area to another one.

How will I know when my claim has been assessed?

A decision letter will be sent to you advising you of you entitlement.
