Article 4 Directions
The protection of Peterborough's heritage of Victorian and Edwardian buildings
These pages provide information and advice to owners and occupiers of properties which are the subject of a planning control known as an "Article 4 Direction". You will find explanations below as to what an Article 4 Direction is, how it may affect your property; and what you should do before considering any building work.
What is an Article 4 Direction?
Under current planning legislation householders have the right to make alterations to their property without planning permission - this is called "Permitted Development". An Article 4 Direction removes this right. So, certain types of alterations require planning permission. The City Council has made a number of Article 4 Directions to protect the appearance of properties and the character of an area.
