What language skills do I require to become an interpreter?

You must be able to read, write and have a good command of English.

You must be able to read, write and have an excellent command of the language in which you are to interpret.

 

What qualifications do I require?

All interpreters used by Peterborough City Council must be qualified at the appropriate level for the interpreting assignment, this can be:

 

  • NVQ3/4 Community Interpreting Course.
  • Diploma in Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI).
  • Be registered on National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI).
  • BSL, DB manual interpreters, lipspeakers must have a relevant qualification or be on CACDP register.
  • Metropolitan Police Test.
  • IND or IAA assessment certificate.
  • Interpreting and Translation Degree or Languages Degree (with at least 25% of interpreting component).

Who provides Peterborough City Councils' interpreting services?

The Council sources it's interpreters from two contractors. These are:
 
Cambridgeshire Interpreting and Translation Service (CINTRA) for all Face to Face interpreting & Translation work.
 
Language Line for all Telephone interpreting.

How much will I be paid?

 
This will be in your contract with the agency you work for. 
 

What is the difference between self employed and employed?

 
Employed.
 
Your employer pays your National Insurance contributions and Tax from your income out of your gross wage.  You receive a net wage after deductions.
 
Self employed.
 
You are responsible for paying your own National insurance and Tax contributions from your income.  When you receive your payment NO deductions have been made.
You need to complete a self employment application form from the Inland Revenue Office.
 

Why do I need to be insured?

 
You need your own professional indemnity insurance.  This is to prevent you from being sued for any incorrect interpreting. 
 

What is a Criminal Registration Bureau (CRB) check and why do I need this?

 
All interpreters registered with the Council must have a valid Criminal Registration Bureau (CRB) check.
All interpreters must be trust worthy and have no criminal convictions.  You are not required to notify us of spent conviction.

Do I need permission to work in the UK?

 
Must have the legal right to work in the UK and have a National Insurance Number.
 
Trained Interpreters are required for all languages.
