Get going, get
active...go walking!

We all need to improve our physical activity...
- Regular physical activity is essential for good health and longevity but the majority of us simply don't get enough! It is estimated that 70% of adult men and women do not take enough exercise to benefit their health and functional capacity (Allied Dunbar National Fitness Survey)
- Many people find it hard to find the time to incorporate physical activity into their busy schedules and others are put off by costly gym memberships and other fitness alternatives
Give walking a try...
- Walking is something which the vast majority of us can do relatively easily and the exercise we obtain from it is of sufficient intensity to improve our fitness and provide us with numerous health benefits
- It can be done at any time and in any place and can replace many short journeys we may automatically take by motor vehicle
It is always wise to gradually build up your physical activity
levels before being over ambitious. It is often easier to get
started in a group or with somebody in a similar capability range
as yourself. This way you can go through the initial steps together
and establish a comfortable activity pattern, and share information
and experiences with others in the group. Avoid setting yourself
too challenging a target before you have a better idea of your
capabilities. Walking too far when you are not properly prepared
can lead to exhaustion, blisters and aching muscles.
It makes sense to start with short walks, of say 1.5 - 2 miles
(2 - 3km), but individuals will choose what is most comfortable for
them. There is no target to aim for, do only as much as you enjoy.
Try starting with short walks on level paths in populated areas
where transport and services are near to hand. This way you can get
help or shorten your journey should you get tired.
If you are busy and do not have much time for leisure you can
still fit walking into your daily routine. Most people walk about 3
miles (4.8km) in an hour (Peterborough Transport Audit, 2003).
Walking to school or work is often not as time consuming as you may
think, especially during rush hour. Even going for a short walk
during your lunch break can improve your appetite, stretch your
legs and heighten your productivity.
