Alternate Weekly Collection

What alternate weekly collection means?

Since March 2005, the majority of Peterborough residents have received an additional brown wheeled bin to allow them to recycle organic garden waste.  With the introduction of this extra collection for garden waste, the way in which the other black and green bins are collected have changed.

One week residents have their black landfill bin collected and the following week they have their recycling bins (green and brown) collected.

With an alternate weekly collection system residents still have the same number of collections as before but with the opportunity to recycle their garden waste now as well.

For more information on how to use your bins please visit our domestic bins page.

How we ask you present your bin for collection

They are certain ways in which we ask residents to present their bins for collection

  • bins are to be placed out on your designated collection day only by 7am.  To find out your designated collection day please visit out collections page.
  • don't let your bin cause an obstruction.  Store your bin on your own property and only place it out for collection on your collection day

People who leave rubbish or bins out on the street face a fine (£100 fixed penalty notice).  Offences in relation to waste receptacles (Section 47 Environmental Protection Act 1990).

No excess waste collected

In a bid to clean up Peterborough's streets the Council has rules on excess waste.

  • We are unable to collect excess waste placed at the side of the bin
  • We are unable to collect excess waste that prevents the bin lid from closing
  • Excess waste will be placed back in the bin for your next collection once the bin has been emptied

Why an alternate weekly collection in Peterborough?

Peterborough must drastically reduce the waste it sends to landfill to meet EU targets.  Landfill should be 24,000 tonnes less than today by 2013 and 40,000 tonnes less than today by 2020!

Peterborough City Council aims to meet these targets in a way that ensures a cleaner and greener environment for communities in the future.  Alternate weekly collections help to meet these objectives in the following ways

  • increases awareness on recycling and waste reduction
  • increases the participation in recycling as people can separate and store their waste more efficiently
  • reduced the amount of waste sent to landfill and therefore decreases greenhouse gas emissions
  • bins are still collected weekly (recycling one week and refuse the next)

Around a third of all councils in England operate alternate weekly collections as they are proven to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by increasing recycling.
