Why recycle

The way the UK currently deals with waste is unsustainable and things need to change.  Gone are the days of the single dust bin and when you could simply throw out all your waste without considering which items could be recycled rather than sent to landfill.

One of the best ways everyone can help to make a difference is to recycle by using your green and brown recycling bins.

By using your green and brown recycling bins you:

Reduce Landfill - The more we recycle, the less we have to landfill in the ground.  This is critical as landfill sites have a limited amount of space and creating new landfill sites destroys our countryside.

Save Energy - Reducing, reusing and recycling materials saves energy required to produce new products.

Future - Recycling your waste allows it to be made into something new, this reduces the amount of natural resources that are required to produce new products and we can save these resources for future generations.

Cost - Sending waste to landfill is not only costly for the environment, it is also a cost to you.  The cost of waste treatment could increase significantly in coming years following the introduction of new government targets for the amount of waste we send to landfill, as local authorities could incur financial penalties.

Pollution - When organic waste such as garden waste is placed in landfill sites, it rots and produces methane gas.  Methane is a harmful gas to the environment and when it enters the atmosphere it contributes to climate change and global warming.
