Why Use Real Nappies
The cost to the environment
Eight million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in
the UK. That is about a million tonnes each
year, and 4% of all domestic waste. We do not
know how long it takes for the plastics in disposable nappies to
decompose, but studies suggest that it may take up to 500
years. With landfill sites rapidly filling up,
and each baby getting through approximately 5,000 nappies before
potty training, the cost of nappy disposal in the UK to councils is
£40 million each year (The Real Nappy
association). For a family with one child in
nappies, disposables can make up half the contents of their rubbish
bin each week.
The cost to you
You can expect to spend well over £700 on disposable
nappies from birth to potty, assuming potty training at two and a
half years. You could save £500 by using
real nappies, and even more if you use them on subsequent
children! Up to one fifth of a families average
weekly shopping bin is disposable nappies, to literally be thrown
in the bin!
Better for your
baby
Using real nappies you know exactly what is next to your
baby's skin. There are no plastics or chemicals
in a real nappy, whereas disposable nappies are made
of super absorbent chemicals, paper pulp, plastics and
adhesives.
