Recycling Education in the city
We feel that it is important to educate the younger
generations with recycling and environmental issues, as they are
the future. Our education department offers a
wide range of activities for young people across the city to get
involved with. Whether it is through school or
an after school club or group, all children are urged to get
involved with recycling and composting through various
activities.
Education pack
In February 2006 the education team launched and distributed
their education pack to all the primary schools in the
city.
The aim of environmental management education is to introduce,
explain and instil environmental issues as a worthwhile lifestyle
change through the appreciation of the importance of issues such as
recycling, composting and the impact of waste on our
environment. Through producing an education
package, talking at school assemblies, activities and tour visits
of the Material Recycling Facility (MRF), Peterborough City Council
can target school audiences on environmental
issues. The worksheets within this pack work in
conjunction with the national curriculum.
Useful worksheets are included in the Pack along with a list
of web addresses that supply excellent teachers packs, CD-ROM's and
a host of useful interactive activities to include in classroom
activities.
Examples of the activities contained in the pack are shown
below
Education room at the Materials Recycling Facility
The education facility at the Peterborough Materials Recycling
Facility (MRF) offers the opportunity to discover some of the
amazing facts about recycling and to see how the materials
collected through the green bin kerbside collection scheme are
sorted before being transported to recycling plants around the
country for reprocessing. The education room is
interesting and informative for all age groups. The use of strong
imagery accompanied by clear explanatory text, games and activities
relating to recycling provides an area, which appeals to both
adults and children alike. Visiting groups can
have talks and activities tailored to suit their specific age,
needs and requirements. First hand experience is
by far the best way to learn, but if a group is unable to visit the
MRF, assemblies or class talks can be arranged.
Why not apply the theme across the curriculum and have a "Waste
Week"?
Useful worksheets are included in the Pack along with a list
of web addresses that supply excellent teachers packs, CD-ROM's and
a host of useful interactive activities to include in classroom
activities.
Composting in Schools scheme
As of the spring term the education team are launching a composting in schools scheme in order to get all the schools in Peterborough composting.
For more information please visit the composting in schools page.
We value all feedback from schools. We would be grateful
if you could complete our feedback questionnaire to enable us to
change, adapt and improve the quality of work presented to your
school.
