Community Car
Schemes
Community and voluntary car schemes are for people who
have particular difficulty in accessing mainstream transport, such
as buses and trains. They also operate in rural areas where public
transport services are not as frequent. Volunteer
drivers, using their own cars, provide this service for a small
charge. Although there is a charge, it is much cheaper than using a
taxi (charges are usually between 20 to 40 pence per mile) and it
is also demand responsive in that the service can be booked in
advance (usually 24 or 48 hours) to pick you up at an exact time.
Some schemes specialise in transport to medical appointments while
others will carry out a range of journeys.
Community car schemes assist the following:
- elderly
- mobility impaired
- those unable to use own or public transport
- rural communities
