HOW TO BECOME THE NEXT YOUTH MP
What is it all about?
The UK Youth Parliament
(UKYP) enables young people to use their energy and passion to
change the world for the better.
Run by young people for young people, UKYP provides
opportunities for 11 to 18 year-olds to use their voice in creative
ways to bring about social change.
The UK Youth Parliament has 600 elected MYPs (Members of Youth
Parliament) aged 11-18.
MYPs are elected in annual youth elections throughout the UK.
Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote. In the past two
years nearly two million young people have voted in UK Youth
Parliament elections.
Once elected MYPs organise events and projects, run campaigns
and influence decision makers on the issues which matter most to
young people. All MYPs meet once a year at the UK Youth Parliament
Annual Sitting.
What’s involved?
In Peterborough, the MYP and two Deputy MYPs are supported by
the 8-19 Service, part of Peterborough City Council.
This year’s Youth MP Kamal Hyman has taken a year out to achieve
his campaign objectives of widening the voice of young people,
supporting those not in education, employment and training, and
increasing opportunities. Deputies Niamh Kingsley and Jeff
Pusey have been working to improve activities in Hampton and
improve skills and employment awareness respectively. All
three also sit on Peterborough Youth Council, which meets every
fortnight to plan activities and every two months formally for
voting on top issues.
Your D/MYPs also met with city leaders including PCC Chief
Executive Gillian Beasley, Council Leader Marco Cereste, and attend
Scrutiny Committees and Cabinet meetings to influence PCC policy
and ensure the voice of youth is heard at the highest levels in the
city. They have been involved in debates with young people
locally in Question Time panels, as well as regional and national
UKYP events, such as debates in the House of Commons.
UKYP National Campaign: Lets Go Transport!
In 2011 the UK Youth Parliament carried out a nationwide poll of
over 65,000 young people. The results of this poll identified
the top five issues of concern for young people in the United
Kingdom today. On 4 November 2011, Members of the UK Youth
Parliament sat in the House of Commons and voted on which of these
five issues ought to become the priority campaign for the UK Youth
Parliament in the coming year. Following the nationwide poll where
65,000 young people identified it as a priority concern and the
subsequent vote in the House of Commons, ‘Public transport:
cheaper, better, accessible’ is now the priority campaign for the
UK Youth Parliament in 2011/12, which will see young people across
the UK campaigning and lobbying for change and action in this
area.
